Choosing your prom date
For most people, the junior-senior prom is often their first foray into formal dating. More often than not, high school juniors go on group dates rather than going out with someone as a couple. However, some could have been prohibited from going with someone the previous year; others could have paid too much attention to other things, such as athletics or studying, to even look for prospective dates and establish the necessary connections with them. By the time senior year comes around, they are usually at a loss as to how to ask somebody out to the prom.
It’s rather easy to get a date if you already have a circle of friends who can refer you to people you might like. If you are a senior, it’s easier to get someone from the juniors – most likely, junior girls would consider having a senior for a date as a status symbol. All in all, there are a lot of people waiting to be asked. The question then, is how to choose someone to ask to the prom.
Friends come first
If you already have a steady boyfriend or girlfriend, getting a prom date should be no problem for you. If you don’t have one, it’s better to start out by looking at your circle of friends. Do you have a friend you feel at ease with? Then he or she is a possible date. However, it will have to be a friendly date unless you are aware that you have more than friendly feelings toward him/her.
Get referred
Your buddies can help you with finding someone you might want to take to the prom. Perhaps they’ll have older brothers or friends of the same age. Someone from another school should be OK. But check on his/her background first. You wouldn’t want someone straight out of a juvenile penitentiary to take you out.
The big crush
Have a crush on someone? Why not invite him or her for the prom? Who knows, this may be the start of a special friendship. Just make sure that the person you are inviting for the prom does not already have a steady boyfriend or girlfriend; otherwise, it could lead to jealousy on the part of the steady partner.
Parents know best
Maybe your parents have friends who have children of your age. Getting someone your parents know will lessen the chance of you being interrogated, and they will have peace of mind knowing that you will be going out with a decent person. You will most probably have more to talk about. Make sure, though, that you only say good things about your parents – you don’t want his or her parents knowing something you’d rather forget.
Always remember, you may have the best prom night attire or the best make up but it will all go to waste if you don’t have a date you are comfortable with. And what is prom night except a night to have fun? So go get your checklist now and start choosing! There’s someone out there for you; all you have to do is look.
