Dealing with prom date rejection: What to do if the girl says “No”
For every guy who gets to take out the girl of his dreams to the prom, there’s an unfortunate guy who fails to do so. Either the girl’s in a relationship, or she already has a date, or just wants to go to the prom alone; but whatever the reason, dealing with prom date rejection will prove to be helpful later in life, when you will have to deal with other, far more hurtful rejections.
Keeping a straight face
Of course, there will be the initial urge to look down at the floor and take out your frustrations on something or someone else, but how you deal after that initial shock will define how you act afterwards. Do not make the girl feel guilty; chances are, you will most likely forget about it ten years from now and might just laugh it off. Just let her know that you understand, and don’t ask for any other reasons or excuses. Smile even if it hurts. With tip # 3 here, she might just want to dance with you on the night itself.
Ask someone else out
Of course, this might just look bad on both of you – it will make it appear that you’re desperate to go to the prom with someone, and it might send her the message that she’s just a last resort. I remember getting rejected a grand total of seven times in high school, and I realize now that maybe it was because I asked the girls in quick succession after getting rejected by my first choice. Looking back, perhaps it was also because I was really desperate to enjoy the night with someone.
If you do decide to ask someone else out, try asking a good girl friend who does not have a date yet. Remember, the aim here is to spend time with someone you’re sure to have fun with, not to choose a future life partner. Then again, a lot of couples started out as “just friends” and ended up getting together after a fun night at the prom. Who knows? It might just happen to you.
Look your best on the big night
Nothing makes them regret saying “No” more than the sight of a transformed guy dressed to the nines. Looking your best shows that you don’t have to be with someone to feel good about yourself, and that you’re ready to have fun no matter what happens. Trust me: people get attracted to people who exude confidence. Choose a suit that looks good on you. Avoid walking with a hunched back, and always wear a smile when talking to others.
Remember, dealing with rejection says a lot about the strength of your character. Going to the prom alone shows that you’re ready to have fun and that you don’t care about the things that get in your way. Besides, you get the chance to dance with as many people as you want without having to mind the date that’s waiting at your table.
