How to make your prom dress look new again

You can make an old prom dress look new again in a few simple steps. Refurbishing a prom dress to make it look new again does not need a rocket scientist to figure out. You don’t have to spend a fortune just to get a dress that’s up-to-date. Making over your old dresses is also an opportunity to bond with friends – why not hold a make-over party? Not only do you save, but you can bond with friends and be eco-friendly at the same time!

Accessorize!

You could use a belt to add a new twist to an old dress. A shawl is also a nice touch. A good-looking brooch could also make the dress look new by drawing attention to itself.

Change the length

More often than not, the simplest change one can make to a dress is the most effective. Take an old dress and change the length by hemming it. Fold the hem, then sew the seam with coordinating thread. You could also use no-sew glue as well. Remember to iron the hem so that it comes out crisp.

You could also take out the sleeves from an old dress. Make sure, though, that all seams are covered. If you are not really that confident about cutting out a part of your dress, you can ask a nearby couturier or dressmaker to do it for you. They will be more than willing to do so at a minimal cost.

A chance to shine

One of yesterday’s favorite motifs -- metallic fabrics -- is again all the rage in prom dresses right now. Make use of the metallic trend and make your prom dress look rejuvenated.

Floral prom dresses: Take a metallic gold pen (silver is also all right) to draw outlines on the flowers. Be artistic – go with the flow and don’t be afraid to overshoot the lines. The last thing you’d like to do is to shade the flowers like you would shade a children’s coloring book. You may also surround the flowers with small dots for an additional dash of metallic detail.

Solid-colored prom dresses: You add a few beads, some shiny sequins, and add a little variety at the area around your neck. You may also create detail at the neck using gold beads or gold paint pens, which can be bought from the local craft or fabric store.

Vintage charm

Take vintage pins from a garage sale and add one to the neck or bust of your prom dress. You can look for great vintage costume jewelry on a budget. Another idea is to add a fabric flower to a dress. Make sure the fabric of the flower coordinates with the fabric of your dress for this one; otherwise, it will not look good after washing.

Again, who says you always have to buy new stuff to be up-to-date? These tips do not only cost less; they can challenge your creativity too. In the end, how the dress looks will be up to you.
